How the Excel Scrubber Engine Works

Modern Excel files (.xlsx) are actually ZIP archives containing various XML files. Key metadata is stored in files like docProps/core.xml and docProps/app.xml. These XML files can contain properties such as the document's author, last modified by, company, creation date, and more.

This tool uses a client-side JavaScript library to deconstruct your Excel file locally. It accesses the core and application property XML parts within the spreadsheet's internal structure and overwrites or removes all identifiable metadata fields. This includes author, title, subject, keywords, company, manager, creation dates, and last modified timestamps. The tool then reconstructs the Excel file with the scrubbed metadata.

The actual spreadsheet data (cells, formulas, charts, formatting) remains completely intact and untouched. Only the invisible metadata used for tracking and identification is annihilated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my spreadsheet data be affected?

No. The scrubbing process exclusively targets the document's hidden metadata properties. Your actual cell data, formulas, charts, images, and formatting will remain perfectly preserved and functional.

Is it safe to scrub highly sensitive financial documents?

Absolutely. This application operates entirely client-side within your browser. Your Excel files are processed in your device's memory and are never uploaded, transmitted, or stored on any external servers. This ensures complete confidentiality and data sovereignty.

Does this remove revision history or macros?

This tool focuses on standard document properties (Author, Title, Subject, CreationDate, etc.). It does not remove complex revision histories (like track changes in shared workbooks), comments, or VBA macros (which would require more advanced and potentially destructive manipulation).
